Poseidon Dive Center Sponsors & Leads Diving Operations at UNESCO x Qatar Museums Open Day: “Dive Into Al Zubarah’s Past”

Poseidon Dive Center was honored to sponsor and operationally manage the diving activities during “Dive Into Al Zubarah’s Past,” an awareness-and-training initiative created by UNESCO’s Regional Office for the Gulf States and Yemen and Qatar Museums to celebrate and safeguard Qatar’s Underwater Cultural Heritage (UCH). The program brought together divers, archaeologists, and heritage specialists for hands-on learning at the Al Zubarah Archaeological Site, a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2013

Open Day introduced Qatar’s diving community to the methods used to locate, document, and protect submerged heritage. The activities form part of Qatar’s early implementation of the 2001 UNESCO Convention on the Protection of the Underwater Cultural Heritage.

As the event’s official diving partner and sponsor, Poseidon Dive Center provided on-water leadership and operational support for the Open Day’s diving component—coordinating dive logistics, safety oversight, equipment support, and briefings to ensure an engaging and professional experience for participants

Why Al Zubarah?

Al Zubarah is Qatar’s largest heritage site, once a thriving pearling town whose maritime story underpins the nation’s identity. Today, the fort and surrounding remains help visitors connect with the people, trade, and seafaring that shaped Qatar—and, through UCH work, with what still lies offshore.

Advancing Qatar’s Underwater Cultural Heritage

The Open Day aimed to build local capacity and public awareness—so more divers, students, and enthusiasts can participate in responsible exploration and stewardship of underwater sites. By uniting cultural institutions and the dive community, the initiative strengthens cooperation and knowledge-sharing around UCH in Qatar.

Thank you to our partners

Poseidon Dive Center extends sincere thanks to UNESCO and Qatar Museums for leading this national milestone, and to the wider heritage and diving communities who took part and shared expertise.
